In Andy Monkhouse’s first game as caretaker manager the Brewers tried and toiled but came away with nothing. It was, however, a rejuvenated Tadcaster team who gave their all and matched their visitors for the entire 90 minutes.
The opening exchanges did not bear much fruit for either side in terms of chances. Neither keeper was troubled until the 19th minute when Eddie Church controlled the ball on his chest before poking a volley towards goal, but the effort did not have the power to trouble the keeper who caught it comfortably.Less than a minute later Marske forced a good save from Harrison Davison-Hale, the shot stopper got down well to his left to parry the ball to safety, keeping out Matthew Tymon.
Little before the half hour mark Tad almost took the lead; a fantastic delivery from Kieran Burton from the left found Church who met it well to head goalwards but again, he could not quite generate the necessary power to trouble Ryan Catterick. The two chances for the Brewers were examples of the hosts beginning to have more of the game. The visitors at any and every opportunity were looking to play the ball in behind and get the Tad defence turned around but to no avail in the first half an hour.
In the 37th minute Davison-Hale produced a wonderful save to tip the ball over the bar - an audacious, long-range attempt from Tymon but a real quality save from the Taddy number one.
Less than five minutes before the break Tad launched a counter led by Romario Vieira, deputising at right back for the suspended Dan Hartley. He brilliantly won the ball back before finding Donald Chimalilo, who turned two defenders and drove forward before releasing it to Church. His curled left footed effort was on target but Catterick was equal to it.
At the break it would have been difficult to really pick the side who were flying high in third in the league - it had had been a good, well fought even half.
Ten minutes into the second half Tadcaster broke at pace; Des Amponsah did really well on the half-way line, controlling the ball on his head and getting beyond his man before finding Marco Basic who looked to return the favour, but Catterick read it and put a stop to the attack.
Just after the hour mark the visitors took the lead; a long ball caused problems for the Brewers backline as Tymon managed to nip in ahead of Davison-Hale and find the back of the net. 0 – 1.
Tadcaster heads did not drop. Burton again got himself forward on the left and produced another inch perfect cross for Church who rose with the onrushing keeper, but the Tad number nine couldn’t direct his header on target.Marske almost doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when McKenzie Dicicco drove in from the left but dragged his effort wide from inside the box. A minute later the same man managed to fire goalwards only to see his effort strike the foot of the post.
Monkhouse responded with a double substitution, Corey Roper and Eddie Church replaced by Jack Crook and Oli Norman, to try and add freshness to a Tad side who were starting to push the visitors back.
With less than ten minutes to play Tadcaster had their best chance of the game, self-made by Basic. With a lovely touch round his man, the midfielder entered the box before firing fiercely, just off target.Tad forced one more chance in the game; Burton for the third time produced a fantastic cross, this one the pick of the bunch, on the half volley, which found Donald Chimalilo who stooped but headed into the side netting.
A frustrating night for the Brewers who more than matched a strong Marske side and on another day may have come out with a point or even three but Marske got the all-important goal and managed to kill the game off to take the win.
A crowd of 373, the largest this season, turned out for the game - they certainly got their monies worth!
