Steve Waide named new signing Fraser Papprill in the heart of the Tadcaster defence as the Brewers looked to build on their point against Worksop last Tuesday.
The opening ten minutes were very even as both sides looked to get a foothold in the game. Shildon managed to work the first chance of the match but a free header from Dean Thexton was out wide of Harrison Davison-Hale’s goal. Marco Basic, again lively, slid the ball through to Des Amponsah who fired towards goal, but his effort deflected into the side netting.
15 minutes in, Davison-Hale produced a fantastic one handed save to palm the ball over the bar from a well hit shot from Thexton. From the resulting corner the Taddy shot stopper claimed and then launched a counter - attack with a big kick for Basic who drove at the defence and fired powerfully but the keeper parried and the rebound just eluded Donald Chimalilo.
Although Tad looked to get the ball down and play one and two touch football to threaten the hosts, it hadn’t quite forced too many openings.
Shortly after the half hour mark Shildon took the lead. A deep free kick fell to the back post, Chay Liddle was free - his strike hit the underside of the bar but Thexton followed in to put the ball in the back of the net.1 - 0
Two minutes later the hosts almost doubled their lead but for brilliant covering from
Corey Roper who dropped onto the goal line and cleared well.
On the stroke of half time the hosts doubled their lead; Thexton again got on the scoresheet, when a fortunate ricochet resulted in a one on one and the big striker gave Davison-Hale no chance with the last kick of the half. It could not have come at a worse time for Steve Waide’s half time talk. 2 - 0
Tad began the second half trying to dictate the game, keeping more possession of the ball and forcing the hosts back creating more openings than they had in the first 45 minutes. 57 minutes gone they pulled one back courtesy of Dan Hartley, the defender coolly half volleying past the keeper from Papprill’s header across goal. 2 - 1.
Despite Albion battling back to being within one goal of the hosts, Shildon still carried a threat, particularly on the break. Davison-Hale was called into action to deny Thexton his hat trick with a strong save.
With little over 15 minutes to play Tadcaster had a couple of efforts at goal which didn’t trouble Matthew Bateman in the home goal. Firstly, Hartley shot well over after Joe Wilkinson got forward on the right and pulled the ball across .Chimalilo would be next to see an effort clear the bar as he worked the chance on the edge of the box but a bobble as he struck lifted the ball over.
A minute later Basic found Romario Vieira (on for the injured Russell) on the edge of the box
but his effort bounced wide of the upright.
Ten minutes to go Jack Crook was replaced by Damien Giliga and the substitute was quickly involved, getting in behind the Shildon defence, only to be clipped by the last man 25 yards out, Ian Maddison was shown a second yellow card.
With three minutes of normal time on the clock, Roper was clattered to the ground and despite the Physio’s best efforts, looked to be in real discomfort for a few minutes before gingerly getting to his feet
Giliga had one more sighting of goal in stoppage time but his effort from just inside the box was comfortably collected by the keeper.
A frustrating day for the Brewers who couldn’t break down a solid Shildon side. They drop one place to 16th in the league
Next up for Tadcaster is a trip to Stocksbridge Park Steels on Tuesday, kick off at 7:45pm.
