Promising Start for Steve Waide as the Brewers Battle for a Point

A battling display saw Tadcaster share the points in an entertaining draw against Worksop at the Global Stadium. Following Paul Quinn’s departure last Tuesday, Steve Waide took sole charge of the Brewers for the first time this season.

Eddie Church who begins the first of his three-match ban and Junayd Cassius-Gill injured were the notable absentees for Tadcaster who welcomed back Dan Hartley into defence after concussion had kept him out since the opening day of the season.

Harrison Davison-Hale who returned to the starting line-up after injury kept him out last Monday was forced into a smart save in the opening minute to deny Cody Cormack but
just five minutes in Tad fell behind when Aleksandros Starcenko hit a half volley from range which found the corner impressively. 0-1.

Tadcaster created their first opening of the game after ten minutes. Marco Basic controlled well in the middle of the park before laying wide to Des Amponsah who drove at the defence, picked Basic out on the edge of the box but his strike which was goal bound deflected off a Worksop head and went wide.

24 minutes in the visitors almost doubled their lead, Lewis Gibbons the big defender managed to get free from six yards out, he stooped and headed over.

Tad forced Sebastian Malkowski into his first save two minutes later; Jack Crook played a brilliant outside of the boot pass for Donald Chimalilo who raced to keep the ball in before creating a chance to strike at goal but his shot was comfortably taken by the keeper.

Ten minutes before the break Davison-Hale was heavily involved, firstly to palm Steven McDonnell’s effort over the bar and from the resulting corner, the Taddy number one punched away only for a Worksop man to loop a header goalward, but Joe Wilkinson cleared off the line.

Tad finished the half the better of the sides and looked to get more control of the game, Crook played Chimalilo in, however, he lost his balance and his effort went wide of the target.

Less than five minutes before the break Tad got the ball down and played some really good football; Basic drove down the right, laid the ball back for Hartley who delivered an inch perfect cross for Chimalilo who got up well to meet the ball but his header was wide.

Buoyed by the way they finished the first half Tadcaster came out well after the break and less than ten minutes into the second half the hosts were level, Chimalilo expertly picked out the top corner with a brilliant curling effort after good work from Des Amponsah 1-1.

The Brewers continued their strong start - the visitors were beginning to chase the game and were limited to counter attacks and looking to go for the long ball.

Kesi Omolokun who made several important blocks and interceptions over the 90 minutes was there to make a last-ditch block in front of Davison-Hale as Worksop tried to quell Tad.

Not long after the hour mark the game was turned on its head as Tadcaster took the lead. The very lively and impressive Basic powerfully found the corner with his strike after he drove at the defence and was able to get his shot away. 2-1.

The game began to become more stretched with both teams having chances, Tad continued to have the better of the open play but Worksop were always a threat on the break.

That threat was proven with 20 minutes left to play as Aaron Sennett-Neilson managed to find space on the edge of the box and his low drive found the corner to draw the visitors level. 2-2.

Taddy responded well, halftime substitute Kieran Burton drove down the left, played a one-two with Amponsah and then let fly but his effort hit the side netting.

On the 75th minute the bright and energetic Amponsah was replaced by Romario Vieira for some fresh legs to try and go on to get the three points.

With just over ten minutes to play Tad almost re-took the lead, Chimalilo with his tricky feet produced some incredible skill to beat his man before laying it on a plate for the skipper Simon Russell who looked to have side footed home only for the ball to hit Vieira who simply couldn’t get out of the way of it, so unlucky for Tadcaster.

Moments later Worksop went forward, and Davison-Hale was forced into a superb save at full stretch to keep the score level, a save worthy of three points but Tad had to settle for one on this occasion.

A decent point in the end, not a bad way for Steve Waide to begin as manager and plenty of positives to take particularly from a spirited and battling second half display where on another day Tadcaster may have taken all three points.

Next up for Tad, an away trip to Shildon on Saturday, kick off at 3pm.

Davison Hale, Hartley, Wilkinson, Omolokun, Sass(Burton), Roper, Russell, Crook, Amposah(Vieira), Basic, Chimalilo.

Subs not used: Hughes, Norman, Giliga.
