The Brewers started the game brightly. Donald Chimalilo was immediately involved taking on the full back and forcing a corner inside the first minute of the game. However, the opening ten minutes were plagued by stoppages, notably Dunston’s Philip Turnbull who received a blow to the head and had to receive treatment plus head bandage.
A quarter of an hour in the visitors had their first clear sight of goal. Romario Vieira who was handed his first start of the campaign misplaced a defensive header which landed kindly for Scott Heslop who failed to keep his volley down - a warning for the hosts nonetheless.
On 23 minutes as Harrison Davison-Hale bravely came and punched away a cross into the Taddy box, the Albion stopper collided with Luke Porritt leaving the latter down and in need of attention, the second stoppage of the half.
Following what had been a stop start opening 20 minutes Tadcaster started to enjoy more of the game. Eddie Church was having his customary battle with two centre halves much bigger than himself but he picked up the ball 40 yards out before driving towards the edge of the box, his left footed effort deflected wide of the post.
The Tadcaster defence remained disciplined and maintained a strong line catching Dunston offside on numerous occasions in the first half an hour.
On the 32nd minute, after a succession of corners for Dunston, the fourth and final corner landed onto the head of Daniel Capewell who managed to lose his marker before heading over.
Less than a minute later Tad took the lead. Simon Russell started the move before Marco Basic took over showing quick feet to release Church who was scythed down by a defender around 25 yards from goal. Up stepped Basic to take an inch perfect free kick that clipped the post before ending up in the opposite bottom corner, a sublime strike. 1-0.
The goal gave the hosts a real boost and the frontline of Chimalilo, Church and Oli Norman continued to press and harass the Dunston defence who seemed rattled after falling behind.
With five to go before the break Norman pressed and then pounced on a poor pass inside the box but a covering defender managed to stop him before he could get an effort off at goal.
Chimalilo would have two more efforts before half time; the first saw the winger’s strike from the edge of the box deflected wide. His second was comfortably taken by keeper Liam Connell - again Basic was heavily involved showing good feet to elude his man before finding Chimalilo on the left.
Like the first half, The Brewers came out quickly in the second 45. Norman forced a corner which Corey Roper drilled in almost causing a defender to head into his own net, only for the ball to fly wide of the far post. On the 49th minute, again, after good pressure, Church pounced on a lose pass before laying off to the skipper Simon Russell who forced the keeper to tip his effort over the bar. From Roper’s resulting corner Kesi Omolokun managed to get his head to the ball but couldn’t generate enough power to beat the keeper who claimed comfortably. The chances were coming thick and fast for Tadcaster
As the game approached the hour mark Basic was brought down late from a heavy challenge from Michael Hall who surprisingly managed to avoid a yellow card. Basic was replaced a minute later for Rinor Ejupi.
Just after the hour mark, Chimalilo was again causing problems for the right back as he played in the overlapping Sass who delivered a brilliant cross which was cleared just ahead of the advancing Church and Ejupi .
On 65 minutes disaster struck as Tadcaster were reduced to ten men. Eddie Church went in for a 50/50 and was a shown a straight red card from the referee. The fans were left stunned but the game turned at that moment
It was to be a tough last 25 minutes for Paul Quinn’s men, Norman was tactically replaced by Kieran Burton shortly after Church was dismissed.
Davison-Hale was forced into a terrific save to deny Jack Elliott, the first of two big saves in the final 20 minutes. With around ten minutes left, Chimalilo who had worked tirelessly and run the Dunston defence ragged, was replaced by Junayd Cassius-Gill.
Cassius-Gill was immediately involved, beating his man before playing Ejupi in behind the defence, Ejupi rounded the keeper and fired with the outside of his foot but the ball agonisingly flew past the far post.
85 minutes in Dunston drew level, the visitors were really piling on the pressure, and it finally began to take its toll. Michael Pearson rose and managed to squeeze his header past Davison-Hale. 1-1.
Davison-Hale made a brilliant save to deny a header shortly after Dunston had levelled, a save which looked to have earned Tad a point. However, deep into four minutes of injury time Dunston delivered a sucker punch - Capewell managed to get free and head the ball into the corner to win the game. 1-2.
A really tough one to take for the Brewers who were good value for their one-nil lead but after being reduced to ten it was always going to be difficult and the pressure immense.
Next up for Tadcaster is an away trip to Frickley Athletic on Saturday, Kick off at 3pm.
Davison-Hale, Vieira, Sass, Roper, Wilkinson, Omolokun, Chimalilo (Cassius-Gill), Russell, Church, Basic (Ejupi), Norman (Burton).
