TAFC to work in partnership with Tadcaster Grammar School

Karen Faughey2 Apr 2014 - 12:24

TAFC’s owners have revealed exciting new plans to work in partnership with Tadcaster Grammar – in an exclusive interview with pupils at the school.

The news was broken by pupils at the secondary school who were interviewing the i2i Sports Directors Matthew Gore and Kent Mayall as part of their annual BBC School Report News Day.

A total of 13 pupils researched, scripted and filmed their own ‘live’ news broadcast and judging by the clips on the school website they definitely gave any professional crews a run for their money.

Pupil Oliver Riley was tasked with putting the questions to Matthew and Kent who revealed exciting new plans to fund the development of sports facilities at the school.

In the interview, Matthew said: "We will invest large sums of money into upgrading the facilities here. So by definition the pupils here at Tadcaster Grammar will be able to use the facilities - whether that be the 4G pitch, the new pitches or the indoor facilities."

Kent added: "It's a great partnership arrangement between Tadcaster Albion and the school. There's probably 1500 to 1700 pupils all from the surrounding villages of Tadcaster itself. It's a great captive audience to encourage pupils and their families and parents to come and support the mighty Tad."

Pupil Oliver Riley said he was “privileged” to be able to interview Mr Gore and Mr Mayall and they reciprocated by saying “how professional” he was in his approach to the interview; the fact that he had researched beforehand and “knew his stuff” when it came to football.

A keen footballer and Harrogate Town supporter, Oliver writes his own blog on football reporting. “We were so impressed with Oliver,” said Kent. “His maturity was beyond his years and Harrogate Town are lucky to have him on their side.”

Other highlights of this year’s broadcast included a discussion with the current Headteacher Geoff Mitchell about the Teachers’ strike, an interview with the incoming Headteacher from September, Martyn Sibley and an investigation into the fizzy drinks ban with Deputy Headteacher Cayte Mulhern.

English Teacher James Watson said: “The BBC School Report helps students to develop an awareness of news and of the world around them, especially their school and local community. It also develops their ability to work independently and to tight deadlines.”

BBC News School Report gives 11-16 year old students in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. It is a collaborative project run by BBC News and BBC Learning. Using lesson plans and materials from the BBC website, and with support from BBC staff and partners, teachers help students develop their journalistic skills to become school reporters. More than 1,000 schools across the UK took part in 2013.

Adam Tomlinson from BBC Radio York has kindly mentored the youngsters from Tadcaster Grammar School for the past few years.

Mr Watson added: “We are very grateful to Adam for sharing his expertise with our students and for his continuing support and we hope we have done him proud once again.”
