Tadcaster struggle in defeat to Penistone Church.

Penistone Church 3 Tadcaster Albion 0, NCEL Premier Division.

Tadcaster Albion fell to a 3–0 defeat away at Penistone Church on a blustery Saturday afternoon in South Yorkshire, conceding twice from long range in a frustrating outing for the Brewers. Spencer Harris returned to the team as a second half substitute after serving his suspension whilst Adam Tweed & Lewis Spillman made their debuts joining from Guiseley & Ossett, respectively.

A tightly contested first ten minutes started leaning Penistone’s way as a mishit back-pass was cut out by Matthew Lee whilst bearing down on goal he was deemed to have been fouled by an oncoming Harry Stead and the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Kieran Ryan stepped up and his effort to Stead’s left was well saved to keep the game even.

Tadcaster had to wait until the 26th minute for their first chance of the game with new signing Tweed reaping the benefit of a ricochet into the box smashing his effort straight at the oncoming keeper, then Jack Woodcock’s rebound was also saved. Just a minute later Penistone full back Carlton Pownall shaped up to shoot from more than 35 yards out with the ball going low and getting caught slightly by the wind striking Stead’s post and rolling in for the lead.

On the half hour mark another misplaced pass runs straight to Lee making a breaking run to get one on one with Stead with the attacker choosing to chip it which is turned away for a corner. Tadcaster had a penalty appeal waved away with seven minutes left in the half as Olly Green brought a high cross under control whilst under pressure from the keeper who appeared to obstruct him before he was able to get his shot away.

The first chance of the second half fell Penistone’s way with a looping effort challenging Stead to tip it over the bar. With only five minutes played of the second half Woodcock pulled up injured off the ball in his first start since returning from an injury sustained barely 20 minutes into his debut almost two months ago, George Brown came on to replace him.

A few moments later, a counter attacking run from Lee sees a wayward cross find Jordan Coduri who’s initial effort is blocked back to him where he plays the ball to Trent Coulter just inside the area, hitting it first time his effort finds the bottom corner for the second.

Tadcaster got a chance just after the hour mark through substitute Dan Brookes after Green chested the ball into his path just outside the area, but his effort was high and over the crossbar, Penistone’s Jack Cawthorn was booked soon after for a late challenge on Tweed.

With 25 minutes to play Stead rushed out to clear a long ball out of an attacker’s path with his clearance only finding Coduri who struck the ball from 35 yards into an empty net despite Curtis Senior’s effort it rolled in and gave Penistone their third. Five minutes later goalscorer Carlton Pownall was sin binned for dissent.

The final 20 minutes of the game lost its steam and brought to an end a disappointing afternoon for the Brewers who sit in 17th place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, two points shy of the relegation zone.
