Taddy on Fire in the Summer Sun

With record breaking temperatures there was something of a carnival atmosphere at Ings Lane for the Bank Holiday Monday fixture against Pickering Town. Tadcaster were still without the injured Alex Wiles but Manager Curtis Woodhouse made full use of the squad after their FA Cup victory just two days earlier

The “Blues” got the match under way and Jackson Jowett made an early run at the home defence until a timely intervention from Jack Walters. Michael Ingham’s long clearance almost put Donald Chimalilo through. Kain Rogerson was penalised as he stretched for the ball and from the resulting free kick Ged Dalton blasted over.

It was end to end in the early moments of the game. However, things were about to change

On ten minutes Rogerson put a peach of a pass to Chimalilo on the left of the box – he took one look before placing the ball in the near corner of the net. 1 – 0.

Pickering had a chance with a floated free kick on the edge of the box but Jowett cleared the bar. Chimalilo was fouled some 35 yards out, and Lebrun Mbeka had to race to the far side to prevent the throw in - he passed to Rogerson lurking just beyond the 18-yard line and he coolly curled number two into the top corner of the net. With a quarter hour played it was 2 - 0

Mbeka fouled Dalton just inside the Taddy half but as McNaughton raced goal wards from the free kick, Josh Barrett was there to quell the danger. The Brewers were immediately back on the front foot and from a Rogerson corner Jonathon Margetts was perfectly placed to head beyond keeper Foulkes who had no chance. 22 minutes played and Rogerson had had a say in all three goals! 3 - 0

It could have been four almost immediately as Chimalilo produced a trademark head on run at the Pikes defence before being brought down in the box; Margetts spot kick lacked power and Foulkes guessed correctly.

Referee Goodwin called time on 25 for a drinks break - it was sweltering .

Pickering has no answers to the relentless attacking play from the home team and when they did manage to get into the final third, the back four of Barrett, Evans, Milne and Walters stood like a rock. That said the Pikes almost got one back on 36 minutes when the ball was floated over the defence but Daniel Earl was offside

There was still more in the tank from Taddy as Chimalilo and Lufudu swapped wings. Barrett tried a 25 yarder but Foulkes was ready. However, the keeper could do nothing on 39 minutes as Chimalilo outpaced two defenders and crossed from the by-line to Margetts who hammered in Tadcaster’s fourth goal. 4 – 0

It wasn’t over yet for the beleaguered visitors; With seven minutes of the half remaining Barrett and Mbeka combined well on the right flank before the defender steadied himself and stroked the ball beyond Foulkes. 5- 0

With the half time whistle beckoning there was still time for Chimalilo to get on the end of Margetts pass but this time it hit the side netting

5 - 0 at half time told the whole story. Breath taking play by Taddy.

The hosts resumed on the front foot but Pickering looked more cohesive following the half time talk from Denny Ingram. Foulkes saved well as Jack Walters put Margetts through for an early one on one. Earl tried a speculative effort after a good run down the right flank. Margetts was clattered by Mathew Turnbull after good work from Mbeka but Rogerson’s free kick was easily taken by Foulkes. Chimalilo sped beyond three defenders as he raced at the defence but his final touch let him down .

Curtis Woodhouse made a double substitution just before the hour mark with Jake Day and Casey Stewart on for Margetts and Walters.

On 67 minutes McNaughton was brought down just beyond the 18-yard line but the four-man wall did its job. The ball came back to Dalton who powered a high shot towards the top right hand corner of the net but Michael Ingham was equal to it.

With twenty minutes to go the players had another essential drinks break

JP Vass was on for Chimalilo with a quarter hour left on the clock. Turnbull rose highest to a Pickering free kick on 76 minutes but to no avail and Hollingsworth got a good cross into the box but there was nobody to take advantage.

Stewart was again collecting more than his fair share of rash tackles but from a resulting free kick Mbeka crossed for the incoming Ioan Evans, the header just skimming the bar before landing on the netting. Referee Goodwin was alert to a Pikes back pass in the box but the Jake Day blast was crowded out.

And so it ended 5 – 0 to the Brewers. The football had been sublime and took Tadcaster up to fifth in the league. Next Saturday they travel to Prescot Cables for what on paper, looks to be the closest of games. Kick Off is at 3.00 pm
