Tadcaster Albion 1 Garforth Town 2 Pre Season Friendly 12.07.2025

Miners Dig Deep Against Brewers

On a steaming hot day, it was the turn of Garforth Town to visit the Young Guns Arena for another pre-season encounter. The “miners” are about to start their second season in the Northern Premier League Division One East where they had a top half finish last season.

It was a disastrous start for the home team when a lapse of concentration allowed a decent cross from the right to land at the feet of centre forward Charlie Marshall who calmly dispatched the ball into the corner of the net. 0 -1.

For the next ten minutes Tad were under the cosh but they survived the onslaught without further damage, now playing ball to feet and battling in the midfield. Skipper Oli Norman launched a dangerous cross into the opposing box but there was nobody to receive it.

On the quarter hour Garforth’s Matt Savage’s free kick towards goal was over-hit, whilst their break down the left shortly afterwards saw a decent pass to Marshall well intercepted.

Albion’s best move thus far arrived on 38 minutes when Rob Guilfoyle received the ball on the 18-yard line and in one motion turned and shot just a whisker wide of keeper Flatters and the upright. The visitors responded with shot stopper Alli Hughes called into action to save what looked like a goal strike to the top far corner.

Following a well-earned break Manager Qualter changed the front-line giving Thompson, Greenway and Byfield another outing. On the hour, an inch perfect cross from Greenway found Thompson in space just outside the box – he calmly placed his shot beyond Flatters and Tadcaster were back in it. 1-1.

Garforth were foiled again by Hughes intercepting a good cross but his double save on 74 minutes was sensational – a low strike from the edge of the box was seen late by the keeper but he just manged at full stretch to push the ball away and then continued the dive as Marshall swept in.

It was pretty much end to end but then in the very last minute Garforth found room in the area and put the ball into the back of the net.1 – 2.

This coming week we conclude our pre-season with a visit from Maltby Main on Tuesday (Kick Off 7.45) and then on Saturday we are home again to Yarm and Eaglescliffe starting at 3.00 pm. The new season commences on Saturday 26th of July with a home game against Beverley Town
