Taddy Sunk by Mariners

Taddy fielded eight changes from the starting line up last Saturday as Manager Curtis Woodhouse gave a well needed ninety minutes for other members of the squad. By the same token six of the Shields team did not start in their last game.It was a first outing for Taddy old boy Alfie Beestin following his return to England and Josh Barrett was back from suspension. Jack Walters wore the captain’s arm band.

The Brewers survived an early scare when Aaron Burn misjudged a cross which hit his feet and rebounded straight to Gilchrist but his close-range effort, with the goal at his mercy, was wide. On 6 minutes Kain Rogerson thumped a screw back from the right from 25 yards marginally wide.

Thurston had a pop from the edge of the box but was the wrong side of the upright. Silas Valladolia-Collins’ deflected squirming shot was well claimed by keeper Coombe. Shaw’s through ball fell to the feet of Annear but the shot lacked pace and Burn was well placed. Kain Rogerson seized on a clearance from a Jack Walters cross but Coombe collected easily

With the mariners playing fast accurate football to feet, the Tad defence was under some pressure as the visitors took the lead on 25 minutes; Briggs defence splitter was met by Mason who unleashed a thunderbolt into the top left-hand corner of the net – goal of the month stuff! 0 – 1

Credit to the young Tadcaster side as they looked for a quick way back but inevitably that created the danger of being caught on the break; Charlton raced down the left flank and the shot through a six yard full of legs was cleared off the line by Burn, Shaw was fractionally wide from an out swinging cross and Mason’s well struck effort from 12 yards was deflected for a corner.

As the interval beckoned, Dipo Oladsun crossed to Jack Waters who took it on the volley but was off target.

One goal down at half time was no more than Tadcaster could have expected. They had their fair share of chances but were not making headway in the final third.

Jake Day was on for Valladolia- Collins as the game restarted. Ioan Evans looked out for the count after being clattered as he defended with Shields forcing play in the six-yard box – play was stopped for two minutes before he could continue. There was an inordinate delay whilst the decision was made as to how to restart proceedings with a drop ball handed to Shields from which they attacked – very strange.
Rogerson’s free kick needed two attempts from Coombe but there was nobody to take advantage. However, the visitors pressure paid off with ten minutes of the half gone as Gilchrist took a quality pass from the right and buried it. 0 – 2.

A one – two between Rogerson and Barrett saw a good lob over the Mariners defensive line but it was a step too far for the advancing Day. The Brewers were playing their best football thus far but the match was effectively put to bed after a penalty was awarded against Evans in the 66th minute and Briggs placed it in the far corner despite Burn guessing correctly.

Still Taddy tried to come back – good play between Beestin and Barrett put Alex Wiles away and his cross needed only a tap but the was no one there. Day was close on 69 minutes

Marcel Chigumira had been suffering from a knock picked up in the first half and with 17 minutes left on the clock was replaced by Andy Milne. Burn saved well from Briggs whilst at the other end Oladsun’s through ball to Day clipped the big mans’ heel. On 82 minutes Taddy nearly got some reward for their persistence when Rogerson’s cross from the by line appeared to be handled in the box but play was waived on.

The goal, went it came , was against the Brewers; with the clock counting down substitute Alli struck a long cross into the six-yard area and there was Annear for the simplest of tap ins. 0-4

Not a happy score line but South Shields are a league above Tadcaster and on the night the better team. That said there were many positives in the shape of much needed 90 minutes for most of the home side and handling the pressure of a quality team in the shape of Shields. Some notable individual efforts as well, no more than Kain Rogerson in mid field

Taddy travel to Mossley AFC this Saturday for a league match. They sit on the same number of points as us , have the same goal difference but have played one game more.
