Tadcaster Albion were beaten 2-0 by two division higher opposition Lancaster City in the FA Cup First Qualifying round replay of Saturday’s 1-1 draw. The Brewers gave it everything but could not overcome their Northern Premier League opponents.
Former Albion captain Nick Thompson made his first start since returning to the club after a ten-year hiatus, with Josh Byfield making his season debut as a substitute.
On a windy night it was Lancaster who snatched the first chance of the game with six minutes played: Harry Stead was called into action superbly saving a close-range effort from Dominic Lawson but the rebound fell to Jim Craig who tapped in from close range giving the visitors the lead. 1 - 0
Another opportunity fell Lancaster’s way for attacker Steven Yawson who broke through but one on one with Stead failed to convert - nevertheless he got the ball back from the rebound and set up a chance that was cleared off the line.
Tadcaster’s first chance of the half came with 17 minutes played when Oli Norman crossed in from the left to Oggie Green who’s headed effort went just shy of the post. Alex Clark’s shot four minutes later was wide.
Just after the half an hour mark Lancaster had another chance with (goalscorer from Saturday’s fixture) Sam Bailey’s long throw wriggling its way through to Yawson who took the chance on the volley and found the net to give the Dollies a two-goal lead. 2 - 0.
Thompson was booked after he was judged to have fouled his man in midfield whilst with ten minutes to go before half time Lewis Binns had two headers in the box without success.
Entering the second half Yawson once again caused problems with a strike from range that began dipping but was well saved by Stead. Then, a minute later, he saw another effort, from distance, go sailing over the crossbar.
Substitute Harry Croft was booked after coming down awkwardly with his marker with 56 minutes played, whilst Lewis Binns had a chance from a well-placed corner which narrowly glided over the crossbar.
Craig went into the book for a dangerous challenge on Clark whilst Spencer Harris was also cautioned in the final ten minutes. A handful of substitutes from both sides brought the game to an end.
Tadcaster are in action again on Saturday away from home in the FA Vase against Carlisle City in the second qualifying round. Kick Off is at 3.00 pm. Next Tuesday we host Pickering Town in a Northern Counties East league match KO 7.45 pm .
