Hero Evans Steals Point for Taddy

Despite the morning rain, the match kicked off in bright sunny conditions as Taddy made their first of many trips this season to the North West and Liverpool in particular. The team was at full strength and it was a debut for new Portuguese midfielder Kevin dos Santos. Alex Wyles was back from Injury.

It was a hesitant start from the Brewers against a team full of big players in the yellow and black shirts and to make matters worse Albion were a goal down in just four minutes; whilst the Tadcaster players were appealing for off side as a ball was played beyond Josh Barrett, James Edgar stole in, rounded Michael Ingham and stroked it into an empty net – basic stuff!

Casey Stewart was foiled by Matty Hamilton as he roared in to the edge of the box after good wok from Donald Chimalilo but the hosts were immediately back down Tadcaster’s throat and had Ingham to thank as he intercepted a low cross from the by line from Mosopeoluwa Awe. On six minutes a push in the back on Alex Wiles as he jumped to clear danger in the box was ignored by the officials , but the danger was cleared.

On 18 minutes Cables put a long high cross into the box but amongst the jostling, Lebrun Mbeka jumped highest to clear. Ioan Evans took advantage of a good move between Chimalilo and Stewart but his shot was thwarted and Chimalilo , this time on a solo run , found himself in a one on one with Taylor but his final touch took him too wide and he failed to punish the keeper.

Ingham produced another good save from a free kick on the half hour mark and again foiled the hosts as Dean’s low effort was easily taken by the Taddy shot stopper. There was a heart in mouth moment on thirty-seven minutes when Ingham had placed himself perfectly for a cross coming in from from the by-line but it was headed over him by a Taddy defender- fortunately there were no front men to take advantage

Tadcaster were at last starting to penetrate the Prescot back four but their finishing needed to be more decisive if they were to go in level at the break. Andy Milne put in a well-placed free kick but Evans could not capitalise, whilst in the final minute of the half Jonathon Margetts, who had been very closely marked throughout the opening 45, saw his shot blocked

1 – 0 at half time was the least the Cables deserved – it would be another interesting half time talk from Curtis Woodhouse! The Brewers were out early taking a warm up with coach Steve Waide.

Jake Day replaced Mbeka before the restart and immediately the target man made a difference latching onto Chimalilo’s inch perfect through ball but just screwing it just wide of the near post under pressure. It was Day again on 50 minutes crossing a dangerous ball but Taylor was ready. Margetts again sent the big man on his way but Stewart could not do justice to Day’s pass and Taylor had a comfortable take from a deflection. Margetts was oh so close from good play between day and Chimalilo. It was starting to look a whole lot more like the usual Taddy!

New signing Kevin dos Santos replaced Stewart on the hour and he was unlucky to be penalised for what seemed a dubious offside as he ran in towards Taylor. Kain Rogerson was on for Wiles with 20 minutes to go as the visitors mounted a strong push for the equaliser.

Substitute, George Hassall, put in a goal bound shot on 72 minutes but despite seeing it late Ingham was there ready but then Tadcaster were so unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty as they broke. With Santos running goal bound, Margetts stole in on his right to hammer home the ball and was upended in the process. Referee Young dismissed the shouts for the penalty but it certainly looked a foul from the stands!

On 80 minutes The Brewers got their just deserts from the second half pressure; Inexplicably the Cables defence seemed to stop in their tracks waiting for the referee to blow for a foul but the ball fell to Ioan Evans marauding on the 18 yard line and he drove a beautiful low ball into the near side corner of the net. In many ways , not dissimilar to the hesitancy that resulted in the Prescot goal earlier! It was the big defenders first goal for the club. 1 – 1.

But that was far from the end of the story as a rash tackle by Barrett two minutes later saw Tadcaster reduced to ten men. Eight minutes to go and Prescot were making the numerical advantage count but they could not penetrate the back four, now with Jake Rose bravely defending the right flank

Taddy survived, indeed both Day and Chimalilo had chances to steal the result at the death. Nevertheless, a share of the points was a good result against quality opposition.

The Brewers face Northern Premier Ashton United at home next Saturday in the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup. Kick off is at 3.00 pm
