Jake Saves the "Day"

Last night saw the hastily rearranged match postponed from last Saturday due to a deluge. Tadcaster were at almost full strength and welcomed back Will Annan in midfield

It was the hosts first match ever in this competition and a chance for the visitors to progress for the first time in the tournament

Things could not have got off to a worse start – in only the second minute Tadcaster half cleared the first corner of the match which was volleyed home through a crowded box by Eliot Nevitt. 1 – 0.

The setback galvanised the concentration of the Brewers; Will Annan’s free kick was curled over the wall but keeper Aspinall was perfectly placed whilst Donald Chimalilo’s trademark run and shot was thwarted by Aspinall and blocked on the goal line by Brown.

On 14 minutes Hazlehurst pinged a volley from 25 yards but was narrowly wide whilst Nevitt shot way over. Michael Ingham was there to catch Denson’s dangerous cross.

The equaliser on 22 minutes was straight from the coaching manual; Taddy played out of their own half with pinpoint passes before Alfie Beestin put a defence splitter through to Jake Day who, having avoided the offside trap, smashed it into the near corner. 1 – 1

On 26 minutes Hazlehurst put Peterson away down the right flank but Ingham produced a fine save to push the shot over to safety. Chimalilo sped passed three defenders before being clattered. Annan’s free kick was deflected for a corner met by Chimalilo but it was just wide.

With six minutes to go before half time it was hearts in mouth for Tadcaster as Andy Milne looked in serious trouble with an ankle injury and was visibly hobbling. The “Purps” were on the front foot as the whistle beckoned; Ingham denied Peterson, Brown’s header in the box was met with the referee awarding Taddy with a free kick, whilst Clair was close to converting Williams’s dangerous cross.

Jack Walters cross evaded both Day and Dipo Olaosun whilst Beestin’s thunderbolt on 43 minutes produced a terrific save from Aspinall.

One each at the interval was a fair reflection of this captivating cup tie.

The second half started and finished with end to end pressure. Denson fired the wrong side of the post, Peterson looked to be clear after Nevitt’s through ball but hit the side netting, whilst Beestin looked to have found the goal only for his eighteen yarder to be fractionally wide.

With 12 minutes of the half gone , the “Purps” broke from a Tadcaster corner; Nevitt smashed the ball goal wards but Ingham had read it perfectly and palmed it away to safety. Manager Curtis Woodhouse decided a change was necessary as Kevin Santos was on for Olaosun

On the hour mark Walters bravely headed out a looping cross at the far post whilst at the other end Beestin put Alex Wiles (on for Mbeka) through but the shot was high. Beestin had a chance on 76 minutes but again it was over

Peterson beat the off side trap as the clock ticked down for a one on one with Ingham but the Taddy shot stopper had done enough to force the striker wide. Hazlehurst curled wide from close range. Donald Chimalilo went into the book for over exuberance.
With the home side edging the final moments Milne produced a game saver in the final minute as he headed clear.

It ended all square and must now be decided next Tuesday at the Global Stadium , Kick Off 7.45.pm That match, if not decided in 90 minutes, will go to extra time and then, if necessary, to a penalty shoot out to decide who should host Brighouse Town in the next round on the 12th October.

Before all of that Taddy travel to Widnes this Saturday in the league K O 3.00 pm
