Tadcaster visited Campion for the second time in three weeks, this time for the away league game, having surprised their hosts in the league Cup with a 3 – 2 win. On a slightly foggy night it was to be expected that their opponents, sitting just outside the play off positions, would be out for revenge.
Campion quickly took the game by the scruff of the neck and with just five minutes on the clock opened the scoring when Sykes put a defence splitting cross from the right into the box giving a simple header to the waiting Grech-Brooksbank 1 – 0.
Just six minutes later Derry Robson found Brook in space on the edge of the box, but Harry Stead was equal to the shot. A minute later the Taddy shot stopper stopped a goal bound effort with his foot.
The Brewers had their first chance on 20 minutes when Olly Green put a defence splitter into the box but there was nobody there to capitalise.
It was one way traffic with the hosts dictating play and no surprise when Campion increased the lead on 26 minutes; Grech Brooksbank with the simplest of tap ins to double his tally. 2 – 0.
It could have been three just after the restart but Whitingham in the six-yard box missed his shot in an open goal. Alex Clark replaced Thierry Eastwood on the half hour.
Bodle was yellow carded for hacking down Adam Tweed, but it was still all Campion with Stead producing another instinctive foot save to deny Sykes whilst in the last minute of the half Whittingham missed a header in the box.
The half came to a close with a rare Tadcaster attack, but Oggi Green was out run by keeper Wilson in a one on one.
It was a very disappointing 45 minutes for Albion and the very few supporters who had made the relatively short trip. Nevertheless, Manager Ryan Qualter had clearly inspired his players during the half time break as Tadcaster re emerged but this time taking the game for the next 45 minutes to their opponents.
With a double substitution, Norman and Ward on for Andrew and Metcalf, Tadcaster were now enjoying most of the attacking play. Ryan Gothard was on the end of Curtis Senior’s free kick on 50 minutes but the header cleared, whilst on the hour the visitors really signalled their intent when Green met an inch perfect ball out of defence from Spencer Harris and squeezed it under Wilson. 2 – 1.
Des Okoro replaced Clarke-Thompson with twenty minutes left on the clock and with Noak Kiwomya on for Tweed Tadcaster went in search of the equaliser. On 87 minutes that almost happened when Kiwomya on a run towards the opposition’s goal was hauled down right on the edge of the box but referee Douglas waived play on.
Skipper Charlie Owen let fly with a goal bound effort from 18 yards, but Wilson produced an inspiring save. Then in the last minute of normal time Senior unleashed another of his trademark crosses finding Green in the six yard box but, alas, the header cleared the bar.
In a game of two halves The Brewers deserved a share of the points but it was not to be.
Next Tuesday they entertain fourth placed Retford FC at the Young Guns Arena whilst on Saturday it is a visit to runaway league leaders Dearne and District. The team needs all the support it can get for these important games.
