So Near and Yet So Far

Tadcaster failed to reach round 2 but for an hour this was anyone’s game. Taddy had four changes from the team that came within a whisker of an upset last Saturday with Michael Ingham, Jake Day, Kain Rogerson and Lebrun Mbeka all in the starting line up

The visitors again bossed the opening minutes with Donald Chimalilo finishing powerfully after being put through by Kevin Santos, but a minute later they were in the lead; Rogerson volleyed an Andy Milne pass onto Ioan Evans whose header couldn’t miss. 0 – 1. It was the central defenders third goal in as many matches

When Connor Hughes appeared to be clattered in the box there was a strong shout for an Ashton penalty, but the Referee would have none of it. Nick Clegg had The Robin’s first real chance but fired over from close range. Sheridan’s long-range effort was blocked whilst Hughes was foiled by Ingham as he followed up. Tames had a chance on 14 minutes but shot wide.

Santos tried a long opportunist shot which was just wide as Ashton came back with Tames curling effort just the wrong side of the upright. John Lufudu’s timely interception thwarted another Robin’s forage into the away box, whilst consecutive corners were cleared by the Brewers.

Ashton were looking most likely for the next goal despite Tomsett heading wide, Sheridan again off target and an unmarked Pritchard volleying wide when unmarked at the far post. Ingham was reassuring between the sticks for Taddy but just when it seemed they would reach the interval one goal to the good, Aaron Smith volleyed the equaliser on 45 minutes

The Brewers came out all guns blazing with Jake Day’s early shot straight at keeper Carnell whilst Santos had a real chance to convert Day’s knock down but dragged it wide. Rogerson’s thunderbolt was blocked whilst Evan’s free header cleared the bar.

Disaster struck on the hour mark when Smith had a simple finish from Tomsett’s through ball (2 – 1) but within two minutes Tadcaster has equalised as Santos pulled the ball back to Alex Wiles who despatched it into the far corner. 2 – 2.

But the tide was turning in the Robin’s favour; Ingham somehow defied what looked like the ball to take the home side into the lead but there nothing he could do on 67 minutes when Wilson had a clear strike beyond the Taddy shot stopper. 3 – 2

Tames missed a sitter with 20 minutes to go, Wilson shot wide from a corner whilst Carnell was first to a long throw as Tadcaster looked for a way through. Substitute Field fired over as the clock ticked down but with 2 minutes left Tames had an easy tap in after Hughes’s pass. 4 – 2.
And so, the dream was over, and it is Ashton United who now host Pontefract Collieries in the second round.

On Saturday The Brewers host Marine in the North West Division – the mariners were relegated from the Northern Premier last season but have made a good start to this campaign. Kick Off is at 3.00pm
