Born in Sheffield in 1961, Mel made 279 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he signed on leaving school. Following a brief move to Rangers, he returned to England to spend four years with Leeds United. He was capped once for England in 1988 in a friendly against Saudi Arabia.

Mel's powerful shooting and attacking prowess saw him hit 49 goals for Sheffield Wednesday, many from set-pieces - not bad for a right back! His surges down the right flank and deliveries into the box often created goals for his teammates and he was also known for his lengthy throw-ins.

His signing for Leeds saw him link up again with his former Sheffield Wednesday manager Howard Wilkinson, then at Leeds United, as he built a side geared for promotion. He became an immediate favourite with the Elland Road fans as his five goals in 42 league games that first season sealed Leeds the Second Division title and promotion back to the First Division after eight years away.

He helped Leeds make an immediate impact on their return to the topflight as they finished fourth and played three games in the new Premier League before suffering a severe ankle injury in the autumn of 1992. He announced his retirement from the senior game in January 1994, when he joined non -league Boston United as player manager followed by a managerial appointment with Stalybridge Celtic

His autobiography Boozing, Betting & Brawling, co-written with Nick Johnson, was published in August 2008. Mel ventured into acting with a cameo appearance as the captain of Sheffield United in the 1996 British drama film When Saturday Comes.

His story is not one to be missed.
