Wednesday the 30th January saw the return of BUCS (University Football) with all four of our sides in action.

i2i/YSJ 1sts 3-1 Leeds Beckett

First up was the 1sts who had games in hand over the rest as they took on Leeds Beckett at Haxby Road. Bryan Hughes and Jono Greening’s side didn’t get off to the best of starts as the visitors broke the deadlock on 10 minutes turning home from a free-kick. Nevertheless it didn’t take Marcos Garcia long to cancel the opening goal out finding the bottom corner after some positive play by Kian Fazel-Sarjui. Despite dominating for the entirety, the i2i/YSJ 1sts struggled to get the elusive third goal in the match as chance after chance went begging. However, the deciding blow came right at the end in injury time as substitute Gunner Gilland collected Garcia’s cross at the back post before composing himself and curling impressively into the far corner with his weaker left-foot. And there was still time for some icing on the cake as Griffin Freeman’s brilliantly ball over the top was latched onto by that man Marcos Garcia who flicked past the advancing goalkeeper for his 12th goal of the season.

Standings: The 1sts currently sit in third place five points behind leaders Teeside with two games in hand

i2i/YSJ 2nds 2-1 UCFB Etihad

The 2nds followed the 1sts at Haxby Road and the match followed in similar vein with i2i/YSJ squandering bags of clear-cut opportunities in front of goal. Nicholas Walker saw his free-kick saved, Kyntrel Hendrickson had a header ping off the crossbar and Jordan Vasquez couldn’t fire past the last defender despite rounding the goalkeeper. As the first half ticked on, the chances certainly weren’t drying up as Owen Ludlow glanced a header wide, Jordan Moore had a strike tipped around the post before the long-haired Ludlow curled narrowly over. The inevitable goal did eventually arrive though as a poor mistake from the UCFB goalkeeper allowed Jordan Vasquez to comfortably find the net. The second half was practically the same as the first with several Trey Jackson long-throws somehow didn’t result in a second goal. Half-way through the second 45 and the away side equalised against the run of play forcing i2i/YSJ to galvanise once again. The game-winning goal came on 73 minutes and it was a couple of substitutes again providing the perfect formula. Brandon Malek played a lovely one-two with Kartikay Kinra before sliding confidently into the bottom corner.

Standings: The victory sees the 2nds stay joint top of the league with Hull but have played a game more

Teeside 1-7 i2i/YSJ 3rds

Jason Blunt and Chris Holloway’s 3rds continue to go goal-crazy in BUCS as they maintained their 100% record. Early substitute Lincoln Augenstein opened the scoring on 11 minutes cleverly lifting over the advancing Teeside keeper before netting his second soon after. It was 3-0 just after the half hour mark as Noah Fuson emphatically finished off a superb team move effectively wrapping up the points. Teeside pulled one back before half-time but it was merely a consolation goal as an own-goal made it 4-1 on 65 minutes. Kevin Terhaerdt continued his fine goalscoring season before Augenstein completed his hat-trick moving clear at the top of the scorers charts for the academy with 18 goals. There was also time for Connor Mayall to get in on the act as the stopwatch hit 90 minutes tapping in after Fuson’s cut-back struck the post.

Standings: 7 wins out of 7 for the 3rds who look to be coasting to the Northern 7B league title in their debut campaign

Sunderland 0-6 i2i/YSJ 4ths

Lucas Kappes opened the scoring for Dan & Nelly’s 4ths on a bitterly cold afternoon in the North East. Tyler Milton, who was the star of the show, netted his first of the season on 19 minutes dancing into the box before arrowing into the far corner. Midfielder Milton was at it again making it 3-0 before half-time winning the ball back before driving through the keeper’s legs. Any hope of a Sunderland comeback was then ended on 72 minutes as Chandler Pugh turned in the rebound after James Clarke’s penalty cannoned off the upright. The comfortable victory was rounded off with two late goals; first Milton sealed his hat-trick before Preston Barnes popped up to score his first for i2i deep into added time.

Standings: The 4ths sit 3rd one point behind second place with the i2i/YSJ 3rds looking set to take the title
