A second brace in the space of four days from Joe Lumsden helped Tadcaster Albion see off Shildon and advance into the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Daniel Moore reduced the arrears at the start of the second half but it was the free-flowing Brewers who deservedly triumphed in the end with late goals from Billy Whitehouse and Casey Stewart making absolute sure.

The management team of Michael Morton and Simon Collins unsurprisingly named an unchanged side after the thrilling 4-3 victory at Sheffield FC in midweek.

It was incredibly lively start from Albion as they put their opponents under severe pressure from the first very whistle. Pressing from the front and pushing for an early goal; Casey Stewart saw his deflected effort just claimed by goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook, Joe Lumsden dragged a good chance wide and Stewart was denied by the keeper again from point blank range.

However the early goal did come for Tadcaster as Billy Whitehouse set Joe Lumsden clean through on goal and he made no mistake rounding Newbrook and rolling into the back of the net.

The joint Northern League leaders Shildon were massively up against it in the opening minutes as Lumsden, Savory and Stewart continued to cause problems. Taddy weren’t letting their foot off the gas as they hunted down a second goal and they came close to doubling their lead on 13 minutes when Corey Roper’s unorthodox volley from the edge of the area had to be tipped over by Newbrook.

As the cup tie ticked past the 20 minutes mark, Shildon slowly started to get more of a feel of the football however Jason Mycoe refused to give Billy Greulich-Smith and Jack Blackford any joy pinching off both several times in quick succession.

Joe Lumsden was looking menacing again at the other end though and he would have been kicking himself on 25 minutes when he superbly created the space to shoot inside the box but pulled his effort wide of the mark.

The visitors came closest to finding the net through no player of their own as Michael Ingham, who was a passenger for the large part, reacted well to stop Josh Barrett’s sliced clearance.

Nevertheless the first half was all about Taddy and they deservedly doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time. That man again Joe Lumsden drove in from the left-hand touchline and played a sumptuous one-two with Billy Whitehouse before brushing confidently around Newbrook and into the back of the net.

The former Stocksbridge frontman was a constant threat in the final third and the Railwaymen struggled to cope with his dynamic movement all afternoon and he came close to completing his hat-trick at the start of the second half when volleying into the side-netting.

Shildon did improve somewhat after the break though and their large number of noisy supporters had something to shout about on 56 minutes when defender Daniel Moore broke free to head Keith Graydon’s free-kick past Michael Ingham.

The Preliminary Round tie really began to hot up after this goal as Albion almost restored their two goal deficit but for a super save from Shaun Newbrook. Casey Stewart played a lovely one-two with Aiden Savory to get in behind the defence but Newbrook stood tall to keep it out.

Another integral member and key part to Taddy’s success was the non-stop all-action midfielder Pete Davidson. Covering every blade of grass and pinching possession back for his team countless amount of times as well as setting the tempo.

Lumsden was vying for his first treble for his new club and he almost got it on 65 minutes when showing fantastic footwork to skilfully evade Dominic Curl and Aiden Heywood but Newbrook was equal to the shot.

As Shildon’s legs began to tire and their frustrations with the referee mounting, Tadcaster’s number nine had another opportunity to put the tie to bed but his low drilled effort was again well read by the busy goalkeeper.

Newbrook couldn’t do anything about the next strike though as Billy Whitehouse wrapped up the win for the Brewers after cleverly dancing past Aiden Heywood and slotting into the bottom corner.

Tadcaster weren’t done there either as they added a sprinkling of gloss on the scoreline with Aiden Savory driving up the byline and pulling back to Casey Stewart who wasn’t going to miss from eight yards out.

A slick display from Tadcaster who await to see who their opponents in the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
