The Brewers slumped to a single goal defeat to Ossett Town after a controversial first half made for an unhappy Halloween at the i2i Stadium.

The only goal of the game came half-way through the first half when Danny South coolly tucked away a penalty kick after an incredibly dubious decision on goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

Town were reduced to ten men seconds later when Isaac Assenso was adjudged to have clipped the heels of Tom Corner.

Aiden Savory couldn’t do what South did however and saw his weak penalty saved by Leigh Overton.

Ossett had a clear and sensible game plan to sit in and frustrate Albion in the second forty five and this is exactly what they did as Taddy somehow didn’t find the back of the net with a countless amount of opportunities squandered.

Brewers boss Michael Morton made one change to the League Cup victory over Ossett Albion as captain Andy Milne was recalled for the injured Pete Davidson with Jason Mycoe moving into midfield.

There was also a spot on the bench for U21’s stars Donald Chimalilo and Matty Savage for the first time this season along with Casey Stewart.

Former Albion midfielder Jake Ellam started for the visitors along with former York City forward Emile Sinclair.

For the first time in a few weeks there was little to no wind at the i2i Stadium which made for a calm and mild contest.

When I say calm, I am only referring to the weather of course after an incident filled Yorkshire derby.

Taddy got off to a positive start as you would expect being the home side, with Andy Milne recording the first effort on target with a powerful header testing the hands of Town stopper Leigh Overton.

When Ossett looked to exploit the space in behind the Brewers’ backline, the experienced Sinclair and enigmatic Kai Hancock were both snuffed out by two brilliant pieces of defending by Josh Barrett and Chris Howarth.

These were the only mentionable moments before the crazy controversy began shortly after the twenty minute mark as Ossett were awarded a penalty kick.

Town hooked the ball into a dangerous area in behind Lawrance Hunter which set up a chase between forward Kai Hancock and goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

The former Norther Ireland International sized up the Ossett man and collected the ball, only for referee Mark Powell to point to the spot.

Protests went on for the next couple of minutes as gasps of disbelief rang around the i2i.

Mr. Powell then went over to speak to his assistant who, was in a better position, stated it should not be a penalty however, the man in the middle overruled his assistant and stuck with his original decision.

Incidentally, the referee showed no card to Ingham.

Nevertheless all of the protestations didn’t faze spot-kick taker Danny South as he confidently dispatched the penalty sending Ingham the wrong way.

The drama was only just getting started though as less than a minute later Taddy were awarded a penalty kick of their own.

Mr. Powell took further action on this occasion showing defender Isaac Assenso a straight red card for clipping the heels of Tom Corner after Aiden Savory’s cute back-heel inside the box.

There’s no doubting that it was a clumsy challenge from the young centre-back but a red card looked to be a tad harsh.

The watching on Taddy fans weren’t to be celebrating for long though as Aiden Savory’s weak penalty kick allowed Leigh Overton to make an easy save.

The gripes and groans continued from the Albion faithful after a wasted opportunity to draw level.

Ossett gaffer Grant Black tried to galvanise and gee up his side who were now having to battle with a man less for over an hour.

And they almost doubled their lead soon after as Kai Hancock volleyed narrowly wide of the mark from range.

The Brewers pressed hard for an equaliser before the close of the first half but saw two brilliant chances come and go from corner kicks.

Firstly Josh Barrett headed just off target before Tom Corner’s powerful downward header was blocked on the line by his own man Mycoe.

Half-Time: Taddy 0-1 Ossett Town

Both sides regrouped at the break and it was clear from the restart that Ossett were going to sit in, soak up the pressure and try and frustrate the home side and rightly so with ten men.

Two minutes into the half Josh Greening came within a couple of inches of cancelling out that said game plan when he volleyed agonisingly wide of the left-hand upright.

Town’s tactic wasn’t exactly shying the Brewers away from clear cut chances as Tom Corner’s first time effort was well saved by the impressive Overton.

Credit to the visitors who did venture forward on opportune moments as Ingham did well to hold a fast-moving Sinclair shot before Steve Ridley bent a free-kick not far wide.

With Taddy bombarding their opponents with wave after wave of attacks, Savory teed up Tom Corner who could only side-foot comfortably at Overton.

The entire duration of the second forty five was virtually attack vs defence but credit to the likes of Alex Peterson and Danny South who blocked shots time and time again.

On one hand you felt that surely the goal was going to come at some point, but on the other hand you got the sense that it was just going to be one of those unlucky nights again.

Adam Baker was introduced on the hour mark to try and unlock the stiff Ossett door and he almost did just after picking out Tom Corner who cleverly touched beyond Peterson only to flick wide with the goal practically gaping.

Into the final twenty minutes and the chances continued to come and go as frustration grew around the ground. Tom Corner again the man involved as the tall forward drove inside Danny South and blasted narrowly over the bar.

You might think that there was an abundance of shots from the home side but actually, the fact of the matter is that Michael Morton’s side got into brilliant areas time and time again but seemed reluctant to shoot on occasions.

The biggest and best chance came eleven minutes from time when Baker’s cross was diverted back across goal by 21’s star Casey Stewart taking the keeper out of the equation, but Corner’s well struck strike from six yards was somehow deflected over by the outstretched knee of Danny South.

Taddy pushed and pushed and pushed some more in the latter stages of the contest but in the end there was just no way through a steely and resolute Ossett Town side who held on to take the points.
