Tad boss Billy Miller kept faith with the same side that fell to defeat at Hyde on the opening day, the only change was Adam Baker coming back onto the bench.
It was a frenetic start to Evo-Stik life at the i2i stadium as both sides went hammer and tong from the off.
You could feel the step up in quality immediately as Ossett started on the front foot with Danny South guiding a header just off target.
Just like Saturday, it was no cagey affair by any stretch of the imagination as The Brewers came agonisingly close to taking an early lead after just a handful of minutes played.
A bouncing ball somehow ran through Ossett’s defence to the onrushing Tom Corner who opted for pure power straight at Brett Soutter. The man between the sticks could only parry the fierce half volley to Josh Greening who followed up with an instinctive rebound which cannoned off the post.
It was end-to-end frantic football in the opening stages as straight up the other end Ossett struck the crossbar from 22 yards out.
Taddy were having to defend solidly as they look to adapt to life at Step 4.
Another good chance arose for the away side after 11 minutes but James Eyles’ tame side-foot strike was food and drink for Michael Ingham.
But it was Taddy who took the lead after quarter of an hour, Tom Corner deflecting in Josh Greening’s blistering strike for Tadcaster Albion’s first ever goal in the Evo-Stik.
Ossett however were absolutely furious at the goal being allowed as they strongly felt that Corner was stood in an offside position when he diverted the ball into the back of the net.
Captain Jimmy Beadle threatened to open his account for the season on several occasions with narrowly missed headers.
However Beadle did kick off his scoring tally for the season in the 27th minute with a sumptuous strike from the edge of the penalty area. Prior to that though we can’t forget the terrific work by Josh Greening to shrug off one, beat another and win a 50-50 challenge to set up the goal.
But the finish from Beadle was out of the very top draw. Controlling it with his midriff and caressing it on the run with the outside of his foot into the top left hand corner leaving Soutter in the Ossett goal helpless.
It was a fantastic first half from Miller’s men, there was a clear reaction from Saturday as the whole team seemed incredibly hungry to succeed. The aggressive pressing was evident throughout; you could see a real unity amongst the ranks which was a pleasure to watch.
Into the second half and Taddy had more or less sealed their first ever win in the Evo-Stik as Tom Corner got his second and The Brewers’ third after 51 minutes.
Greening slid in Rob Youhill down the right-hand side who put it across goal and on a plate for Tom Corner who touched under the goalkeeper.
As expected Ossett Albion had a strong spell in the second half as they looked to find a way back into the contest but Taddy’s fierce defence was allowing many clear chances at goal.
As the game wore on, it started to open up and become stretched somewhat more with the Unicorns pushing bodies forward. This was the case when substitute Adam Baker cut inside Dominic Riordan and fired tamely on target.
Rob Boardman was looking like the man most likely to find a breakthrough for the visitors as the striker lobbed onto the roof of the net and then guided a header narrowly wide of the mark.
Taddy almost rounded off the evening with goal number four as Adam Jones’ back pass was way short of the goalkeeper which was pounced upon by the speedster that is Conor Sellars who took it past Soutter but saw his chipped effort nodded off the line by Riordan.
You couldn’t have asked for a better first home game in a new division to get the ball rolling and get off the mark. A superb performance to beat a side who finished in a very respectable 10th place last season.
Plenty of positives to take into Saturday’s mouth-watering FA Cup tie against Scarborough Athletic.
