The lack of goals continues to be somewhat of a concern for Morton and Collins after a number of missed chances went begging.

Selby: Lawrie, Kennedy, Robinson, Ramsay, Gothard©, Alasan-Ann, Collier, Snodin, Flanagan, Clamp, Cable

Tadcaster: Ingham©, Howarth, Walters, Barkworth, Coates, Miller, Roper, Davidson, Savory, Whitehouse, Lumsden

Aiden Savory squandered Taddy’s best chance of the evening blazing over Billy Whitehouse’s cutback from six yards out with the goal gaping. In the end Selby punished the misfiring Brewers with Gary Collier rounding off a sharp counter attack by chipping perfectly over Tom Young with the outside of his boot.

“I’d be worried if we weren’t creating chances” said boss Michael Morton in his post-match interview. It has however become a growing issue having found the net just three times in five friendlies.

On a picturesque low-sun evening at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium, Tadcaster started as expected being the higher league side, dominating possession and asking frequent questions of their opponents. Former Taddy goalkeeper Pete Lawrie had a busy night in-between the sticks for his new club as he comfortably palmed Joe Lumsden’s effort away in the early exchanges.

It was a bright start made by the Brewers who continued to put Town’s defence and goalkeeper under pressure. The deadlock should have been broken on 18 minutes when Corey Roper’s curling cross dropped to the feet of Aiden Savory but he could only poke into the body of Lawrie from eight yards.

Selby were given very few opportunities to test Michael Ingham but some well-engineered play from Gary Collier forced the giant Northern Irishman to beat a swirling shot clear. It was at the other end where the most noteworthy moments arose as Lawrie was called into action once again getting down well to tip Paddy Miller’s difficult low free-kick wide of the mark.

Frustration began to grow in the Taddy ranks as Lumsden pulled a shot off target before Savory drove across the face of goal but no blue shirts were on hand to help themselves to a tap-in.

Half-Time: Selby 0-0 Tadcaster

Michael Morton’s men came out and continued to boss proceedings as it still only seemed a matter of time before they opened the scoring. Five minutes into the second half and close they went again as man mountain centre-back Harry Coates escaped his marker only to see his towering hooked off the line by Alex Robinson.

You get the sense that it might not be your night when last year’s top scorer Aiden Savory blazed over the bar from close range after some good work by Joe Lumsden and Billy Whitehouse. The pitch wasn’t quite as pristine as Albion are used to back home but it’s something that can’t be used as an excuse.

Joe Lumsden is still searching for his first Taddy goal after another frustrating night but the striker was still getting himself into great areas where chances were being carved out. First his close-range volley was well stopped by Lawrie before running into the penalty area but opting to slide across goal in which Adam Baker couldn’t quite latch onto.

Substitute goalkeeper Tom Young made a positive attacking save when flying off his line to thwart a loose ball but it was the home side who netted the only goal of the game eight minutes from time. It all started from an Albion free-kick which quickly broke down with Selby igniting a break. It looked to be control when Jack Walters held possession but an intended back-pass off a teammate led to Gary Collier superbly chipping over Young.

Full-Time: Selby Town 1-0 Tadcaster Albion
