The Brewers went into the cup tie on the back of a 5-0 league win over Nostell on Saturday and this fixture saw the pressure of the league relieved for a night.
Tadcaster manager Billy Miller made just the one change to the side that saw off Nostell Miners Welfare with Adam Baker coming in for Conor Sellars.
The first half shall we say wasn't the best advert for the NCEL League Cup. It was a fairly even half of football to which the home side had the best opportunity to take the lead. Right on the stroke of half-time James Petronzio went on a superb run down the left-hand side which saw him carry the ball all the way up the by-line and towards the goal. The defender then pulled it back to the unmarked Adam Drury whose effort was well blocked by Dan Clayton and the attack soon fizzled out.
In terms of Taddy, they didn't create a clear chance at goal in the first 45, only conjuring up long range attempts or nearly met crosses.
Liam Ormsby went closest with a well executed volley which bent agonizingly wide of the left-hand post.
However, into the second half it took The Brewers less than 60 seconds to take the lead. Captain Jimmy Beadle had the composure and vision to slide it side wards to Nick Black whose low drive crept under Scott Drury in the Grimsby goal. The lively attacker now has three goals in his last three appearances.
For anyone who haven't seen Grimsby Borough play before, you would have been watching the cup tie thinking, 'How is this side down the bottom end of the NCEL Division One' because they were playing some very good football. They were organised and structured at the back, solid and fluent in midfield as well as looking a threat going forward.
And on the stroke of the hour mark, their good play paid off. Former Manchester City player Adam Drury fired low and past Gary Stevens into the bottom left-hand corner to level the cup tie. I think it was fair to say also, they probably deserved it.
The home side could have edged in front shortly after as Lee Briggs unorthodoxly headed just over Jack Debnom's free-kick.
Adam Baker was looking likely to send Taddy into the next round on a number of occasions throughout the match. Firstly, a cross from the left wing found it's way to Baker at the back-post who sliced way over the mark. His second effort was much closer though, smashing a rasping left-footed shot inches wide.
With 90 minutes done, the cup tie went into extra-time to see if a winner could be found, if not, penalties.
The elusive third goal in the match came in the 109th minute and it was that man Adam Baker who scored it. Jason Mycoe's chipped cross was nodded back across goal by Josh Greening allowing Adam Baker to roam in unmarked to side-foot into the back of the net.
Grimsby pushed hard for an equaliser to send it to a penalty shoot-out but in the end Tadcaster held on to reach the NCEL League Cup Quarter-Final.
