REPORT: Ten Man Tad Dig In To Earn Point

In a gutsy and spirited performance, the Brewers battled with ten men for over 75 minutes in a hard fought goalless draw with Colwyn Bay.

Manager Billy Miller made three changes to the side that got back to winning ways against Silsden in the County Cup. Chandler Hallwood, Erico Sousa and Dan Thirkell all returned to the starting line-up, with Jason Mycoe missing through injury.

On a bright but brisk afternoon at the i2i stadium it was the Brewers who started on the front foot however the big talking point of the match came in the 13th minute.

Jono Greening and Mike Roddy went in hard but fair on each other on two occasions before the Tadcaster captain was shown a straight red card for catching the Bay man on his knee in the third challenge.

No Colwyn Bay players seemed to be unhappy with the challenge as it looked somewhat innocuous and certainly didn’t look malicious or intended but nevertheless referee Michael Gillespie went straight to his back pocket and brandished Greening the red card.

Taddy’s tough test just became a whole lot tougher as they now had to work that bit extra harder with Colwyn having a man advantage.

Despite going down to ten men, it changed very little in terms of the contest as a whole, both teams struggled to get into any kind of rhythm but Tad probably looked the more likely to score first.

Referee Gillespie certainly wasn’t a favourite with the home fans as his cards were out again to book Josh Grant and Mike Roddy for soft fouls.

Sticking with the referee, partly because there were no noteworthy chances and partly because he was the centre of attention, he continued to receive grief from the watching on home fans as the already booked Roddy was penalised again.

Chants of “OFF, OFF, OFF” were to no avail as the referee gave him one last talking to.

It was a half of very few chances, well, one to be precise as a tame shot from Luke Denson was comfortably collected by Chandler Hallwood.

The closest Taddy came was Rob Youhill smashing into the side-netting from an acute angle.

The ten men of Tadcaster started the second half with greater purpose than the visitors as Erico Sousa screwed wide after seeing his initial strike blocked.

The opening ninety seconds of the second half were more open than the entire first half as at the other end Liam Turner tested Hallwood’s handling with a fierce strike but the former Walsall stopper held superbly.

Ten minutes into the half and Taddy were looking towards the referee once again, this time they wanted a penalty kick for handball though as Josh Barrett’s hooked effort struck Mike Roddy on the arm, nothing given however.

Looking at the match, you couldn’t tell that Tadcaster were a man light as they continued to push forward for the opening goal.

Conor Sellars’ fizzing free-kick across goal from just outside the penalty area on the left-hand side was deflected inches wide of the post by defender Gareth Grant.

The first clear chance of the afternoon came twenty minutes into the second half as Bay began to be a little more adventurous.

Substitute Will Jones found himself unmarked six yards out as he headed down towards the bottom left-hand corner but Josh Barrett read it brilliantly and hooked off the line.

Barrett has without doubt been one of the Brewers’ star performers week in week out this season, a solid 8/10 every game and this is playing at centre-back, a position he has only started to feature in this season.

The visitors from North Wales were starting to try their luck more and more as the half went on. Danny Andrews came close for Bay curling narrowly wide of the mark from 25 yards.

Three minutes later however and Andrews came even closer to breaking the deadlock. The wide man cut inside and drilled a shot goalwards forcing Hallwood to tip onto the crossbar.

Full-back Luke Denson continued to try his luck as Taddy’s legs began to tire, but the Bay defender couldn’t find the target driving viciously across goal.

Albion had two last gasp chances to take all three points with a free-kick and corner both taken by Josh Greening but Colwyn goalkeeper Karl Wills managed to beat both clear.

With the current run that Taddy have been on, it could have been very easy to sit back and soak up the pressure but they didn’t do that. They continued to push bodies forward and try to take all three points despite Colwyn Bay having a man advantage.

Colwyn Bay, who also find themselves on a winless run, looked short on confidence and never looked to force the issue and utilise their man advantage.

The work-rate by all sixteen Tad players involved was tremendous; Carl Stewart up top ran tirelessly, Josh Barrett defended admirably as ever along with Josh Grant, Tom Allan and Jordan Armstrong who persisted on being an outlet down the right-wing.

Conor Sellars had to drop into a deeper role following the red card but he ran his socks off for the 94 minutes never giving their opponents a moments peace.

Rob Youhill and Erico Sousa provided the width going forward and the cover going backwards and Dan Thirkell won countless amounts of aerial duels and cleared their lines on a number of important occasions.
