Tadcaster Albion got back to winning ways this weekend with a comfortable 4-2 victory over Staveley Miners Welfare.

The Brewers are now second in the NCEL Premier – just one point behind the league leaders Brighouse who have two games in hand.

With Brighouse now well placed to take the title, the gaffer is determined for Tadcaster to win their remaining games and take second place.

Paul said: “It was a good response on Saturday from the lads. We got a good early goal from Stuart Rice who unfortunately then did his knee in, so had to come off.

“We were a bit sloppy at the back considering all the clean sheets we have had recently and unfortunately we conceded a cheap goal to make it 1-1.

“Danny Critchlow came on and scored a good goal. The pass from the midfield split the defence and he put it in the back of the net to make it 2-1.

“Then we gave a stupid free kick away and they scored from that which annoyed me again.

“We had some great deliveries from both corners and free kicks and as a result Matthew Sparkes got a good header to take us to 3-2.

“At half time, we said we’ve got to try and keep a clean sheet in the second half, and not long after the break we got a breakaway and Calum got a good tap in to make it 4-2, so it ended up quite a comfortable win.”

This Saturday, The Brewers play their final home game of the season against third place Barton Town Old Boys – in what’s being billed as the battle for second place.

Barton have won three of their four last games, but slipped up on Saturday going down 3-2 at home to Albion Sports.

Paul said: “We’ve just got to try and get as many points as possible. Obviously Brighouse are going to win the league. We’ve got to try and finish second, so this Saturday’s game is imperative to everyone.

“Barton are a very strong side however with some great players. Gareth Barlow always causes trouble up front. He’s always a handful for anyone who plays against him. I’ve seen him play quite a few times over the years and I’ve always liked him.

“Ashley Dexter at the back is also a very strong player. They’ve both played for Barton for a few years and are key players in their team.”

Looking back over the last 42 games, how does Paul feel the season has gone?

Paul said: “After all the trauma of what we’ve been through, it’s a remarkable effort from everybody at the club (not just the players) that we find ourselves battling for second place.

“i2i came in and took over and relieved a lot of the pressure that was on Kevin Derry, Dave Lloyd, Nobby and myself who kept it going for the first three months – plus all the other volunteers who were trying to do the ground and keep everything going.

“When we think about where we were then compared with where we are now, it’s a remarkable story.

“We know we’re not going to win the league, but at least we’ve shown that the club is in safe hands and we can only get stronger.”

Saturday’s game against Barton kicks off at 3pm. Admission to the match is free for everyone.
