Ingham: “We Should Be Excited, Not Nervous”

This week we sat down with Taddy goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

“Tuesday night was a good win for us. To be fair to Colwyn Bay, they are definitely one of the better sides that we have played against this season but what I like about our team recently is that we are playing good football but we can also dig in and do both sides of it.”

“It was a very good performance apart from the slip in concentration right at the end.

Albion came flying out of the blocks in the second half scoring inside sixty seconds but Ingham claims a few minor tweaks paid off.

“The gaffers wanted us to get behind the ball quicker when out of possession and hit them on the counter attack which is exactly how we got our two goals.”

“I’m not sure if Mikey & Si agree but I think we are easy to manage at the minute because yes we are winning games but we also have that grit, determination and togetherness.”

With the expansive playing style that the management team like to play, Ingy is enjoying expressing a different side of his game.

“In the start of my career, it was always my job to hit the big number nine; for example at Sunderland it was Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips so I’ve been one of those goalkeepers that’s had to adapt to the new style of play.”

“I like to use the old golf phrase, ‘have you got all the clubs in the bag’, but I quite enjoy testing myself and I am glad the bosses are allowing me to express that side of it.”

With club captain out injured, Ingham has stepped up to take the armband, but the former Northern Irish International states it doesn’t change his role in the side.

“Being captain doesn’t really change my role too much, I try to use my experience in the changing room but I just get on with it, it’s just a piece of material around the arm at the end of the day. I try and encourage leaders on the pitch, get centre-backs to communicate more along with young Shep at right-back.”

“We’ve got a really good changing room at the minute, the team spirit is going really well and I believe that’s one of the main reasons as to why we were being successful of late.”

“I didn’t realise Atherton were unbeaten in 8 games but its business end of the season now, every game is going to be tough. We are coming up against players who are playing for contracts but we’ve just got to continue what we’ve been doing and be tough to beat at home.”

The Taddy number one is coming up against a goalkeeper that deputised for him earlier in the season in Greg Hartley.

“It’ll be nice to see Greg, he’s a great lad but there’ll be no sentiment however as we need the points. No doubt he’ll want to prove a point also though.”

“We’ve got 12 cup finals left from now until the end of the season, if we keep our standards high I am confident we will be in and around the play-offs and that’ll be a good achievement for us.”

“The lads have got to look at it as a challenge, it’s exciting times ahead but if we are going to reach the play-offs then we have to stay clear of injuries and keep a settled team.”

“We should be more excited than nervous, hopefully we’ll get the skipper [Andy Milne] back towards the end of the season and if you look at the bench now and see how strong it is, we’ve got very good competition for places.”
